Community Guidelines — Cloister
Last updated: October 25, 2026
Cloister is a place to write honestly about your days, under a name you choose, and to read what other adults write about theirs.
- There are no likes and no comments, because nothing here should be a performance.
- Everything you post as an entry is public to everyone signed in to Cloister.
- Messages arrive only if the other person has chosen to receive them.
These guidelines exist so that people can keep writing honestly without being hurt by it. They are part of our Terms of Use.
The short version.
- Nothing sexual involving anyone under 18. Ever. Not in stories, jokes, role-play or links. We close the account and report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
- Write about your life, not about exposing someone else's. Don't identify private people in ways that shame, endanger or out them.
- No harassment, threats or hate.
- No sexual content in public entries. No sex for sale, no sexual solicitation, no unwanted sexual messages.
- No intimate images or links shared without consent, and no threats to share them.
- You can write about your pain. Don't push anyone toward self-harm.
- Be one real adult with one account. No bots, no scraping, no impersonation, no ban evasion, no unmasking people.
- Respect other people's creative work.
The details follow.
1. Child safety: zero tolerance
Cloister is for adults only. Even so, we treat any sign of child sexual exploitation as the most serious violation there is.
Not allowed:
- Any content that sexualizes a person under 18, real or fictional, including stories, fantasies, "age-play" or jokes.
- Sexual conversations with someone who is, says they are, or appears to be under 18. Also: asking them for images, arranging to meet them, or offering them anything in exchange.
- Links to, requests for, or offers of sexual material involving minors.
- Threatening to expose someone's intimate images or information to get money, favors or more images ("sextortion"), whatever their age.
- Identifying a victim of child sexual abuse.
- Content that promotes or normalizes sexual attraction to children.
Allowed:
- Survivors writing about what happened to them, without explicit sexual detail.
- Talking about child safety, prevention or recovery in a way that doesn't sexualize anyone.
- Writing about seeking help for unwanted thoughts, without describing or seeking abuse.
What happens: the account is suspended at once and closed, and we try to keep the person from coming back. We keep the evidence and report it to NCMEC, as federal law requires.
If someone on Cloister appears to be under 18, report their profile ("Involves a minor (child safety)"). If you believe a child is in danger, call 911, and you can also report to NCMEC's CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org.
How reports about minors are handled is summarized in our Child Safety Standards.
2. Writing about real people
This is the rule that matters most on a diary app. People in your life will appear in what you write. That's fine. Exposing them is not.
Allowed:
- Your feelings about the people in your life: family, partners, exes, friends, coworkers.
- What happened to you, including when someone treated you badly.
- Criticism of public figures' public actions.
Not allowed:
- Naming a private person together with details that would let others recognize them, when the entry shames, accuses, sexualizes or endangers them. Details like these count: their workplace, school, town, job title, physical description, or social-media handle.
- Posting anyone's private information: home address, phone number, email address, license plate, financial or medical details, immigration status, or where they will be at a given time.
- Claims about an identifiable private person's sex life or sexual history.
- Accusing an identifiable private person of a crime. If you have been harmed, you can write about your experience; please take accusations to the police or a lawyer, not to Cloister.
- Posting someone's private messages to embarrass or pressure them.
- Trying to find out, guess or reveal who is behind another user's username ("unmasking").
A practical test: if a stranger reading your entry could work out who the other person is, change or leave out the identifying details.
Survivors: you can always write about what was done to you, including abuse and assault. We will not remove your story for describing your own experience. If an entry identifies the person who harmed you, we may ask you to remove the identifying details rather than remove the entry.
3. Harassment, threats and hate
Not allowed:
- Repeated unwanted contact. Once someone has blocked you, ignored you, or told you to stop, stop. Don't come back through another account.
- Insulting, degrading or humiliating someone, or encouraging others to do it.
- Threats of violence or harm against anyone, including "jokes" that read as real threats.
- Attacking people because of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, caste, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or serious illness.
- Wishing or encouraging death, self-harm or suicide on someone.
- Celebrating or supporting violent attacks or violent groups.
Allowed: strong feelings, anger, and venting about what someone did to you, as long as it doesn't become a threat, harassment of an identifiable person, or hate.
Credible threats of violence lead to immediate suspension and closure of the account. We may report them to law enforcement.
4. Sexual content
Cloister is a place for honest, everyday writing about life. Public entries can't contain sexual content. Writing about love, relationships and heartbreak is welcome.
Not allowed in entries:
- Descriptions of sexual activity, and erotic writing of any kind.
- Offering or asking for sex, "sugar" arrangements, sexual services, or sexual content, whether paid or unpaid.
- Advertising or linking to escort, cam or other adult-service websites.
- Sexual content about an identifiable real person.
In private messages: what two adults choose to say to each other is up to them, but sending sexual messages or requests to someone who hasn't clearly welcomed them is not allowed, and selling or soliciting sex is never allowed.
5. Intimate images and consent
Cloister doesn't support image uploads, but intimate content can still be shared as a link or described in text.
Not allowed:
- Sharing, linking to, offering or asking for intimate images or videos of a person who did not agree to that. This includes images that were faked or edited, for example with AI.
- Threatening to share such images, or using them to pressure anyone.
If an intimate image of you has been shared on Cloister without your consent, you can ask us to remove it, even without an account. See section 10 of our Terms. We act on valid requests within 48 hours.
Outside Cloister:
- StopNCII.org helps adults;
- NCMEC's Take It Down service helps with images taken when you were under 18.
6. Suicide, self-harm and eating disorders
You can write about this. Depression, urges to hurt yourself, suicidal thoughts, recovery, relapse: this is what a diary is for.
- We will never suspend you for writing about your own pain.
- If you report an entry for suicide or self-harm, the app shows you how to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
- We don't scan entries for signs of risk, and we don't contact anyone on your behalf.
Not allowed:
- Encouraging, daring or praising self-harm, suicide or disordered eating.
- Instructions or methods, or "tips" for hiding self-harm or extreme weight loss.
- Suicide pacts or partners.
- Mocking people who struggle.
If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), chat at 988lifeline.org, or call 911.
7. Messages
- Messages are opt-in: nobody can write to you unless you choose to receive messages.
- Receiving messages is not consent to anything else. Respect "no" and respect silence.
- If someone blocks you, don't try to reach them another way.
- If someone tells you they are under 18, stop the conversation and report their profile.
- Don't ask people for personal information such as their address, workplace or photos.
- Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. If a message is reported, we review it along with up to 20 messages in that conversation, ending with the reported one (see our Privacy Policy).
8. Your account and honesty
Not allowed:
- More than one account per person.
- A new account made to get around a ban, a suspension or a block.
- Pretending to be another person, a brand, or Cloister staff.
- Usernames that impersonate someone or that include offensive terms.
- Buying, selling or trading accounts or usernames.
- Bots, automation, scraping, bulk-copying entries, or any unofficial way of accessing Cloister.
- Spam, scams, pyramid schemes, or links designed to trick people.
- False or bad-faith reports, or using reports to harass someone.
9. Illegal and dangerous activity
Not allowed:
- Selling or buying illegal drugs, weapons, or anything that is illegal to sell.
- Human trafficking, forced labor, or exploitation of anyone.
- Planning or promoting crimes or violence.
- Hacking, doxxing, or sharing stolen data.
Writing about your own past, including drug use or legal trouble, is allowed.
10. Other people's creative work
- Don't paste large parts of books, articles, song lyrics or other writing you don't own.
- Short quotes that you credit and discuss are usually fine.
- Copyright owners can send us a notice (Terms, section 9).
- We close the accounts of repeat infringers.
Reporting
You can report from any entry, profile or message. The reasons you can choose:
| In the app | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Harassment or bullying | §3 |
| Shares private details about a real person | §2 |
| Suicide or self-harm | §6. We will also show you support resources |
| Hate or threats of violence | §3 |
| Sexual content | §4 |
| Involves a minor (child safety) | §1 |
| Spam or scam | §8 |
| Pretending to be someone else | §8 |
| Something else | anything not listed |
What happens after you report:
- We save a copy of what you reported at that moment. If you reported a message, the copy includes up to 20 messages of that conversation, ending with the reported one. We keep it so the report can be reviewed even if the content is later deleted.
- The person you reported is never told who reported them.
- We review reports in the order they arrive, putting child safety and threats first.
- "Report and block" does both at once. You won't see that person again and they won't be able to reach you.
What we do when rules are broken
Some words and phrases, for example slurs and sexual content involving minors, are blocked automatically before an entry or a message is posted. If your entry is blocked and you were writing about something that happened to you, try putting it in your own words.
We look at how serious the violation is, the context, and the account's history. We may:
- remove the content;
- turn off the account's ability to send messages;
- suspend the account temporarily;
- close the account.
Immediate suspension and closure applies to child sexual exploitation, credible threats of violence, and sex trafficking or selling sex, and we try to keep the person from coming back. We may also report these to NCMEC or law enforcement.
When something is reported as involving a minor, the account's ability to send messages is paused automatically until a person reviews the report. Writing and reading entries isn't affected.
Appeals: if you think we got it wrong, email growevolve.business@gmail.com within 30 days with your username and what happened. A person will review it and reply.
